Formal individual safety and sea survival training is an integral part of the overall seaworthiness of any yacht

What you get?

2 days of theoretical and practical personal offshore safety and sea survival training that prepares participants to negotiate passage making and ocean racing with competence and confidence.  The course is endorsed by Sail Canada and leads to the award of an ISAF personal offshore safety certificate of competence.  The international certificate is valid for a period of five years for offshore racing.  To see the syllabus click here.  The format is a mobile course that can be delivered at any suitable location.  For more information on mobile delivery click here.

What participants have said about it?

".................To be honest with you, your course was far more relevant to the size boats my industry works with than the Marine Emergency Duties (MED) course that I have taken before and is required for people in the fisheries. "
"......... I really enjoyed the course. Went in with the expectation that it was just something I had to do to be compliant but the information was great and the
practical portions could be life savers.  I would recommend it to all sailors (and have to a bunch already). "

"...This was an awesome 2 day course involving inflating liferafts, flipping them over, getting in and out, how your own lifejacket performs, and how to increase your chances of survival both in boat/crew preparation (avoidance) and should the unthinkable happen. Everyone who has a boat should consider taking this course. "

Who should get it?

Cruisers as well as coastal, offshore and distance yacht racers and anyone contemplating extended sailing across open water that requires any degree of self-sufficiency.  The course is especially valuable to crewmates who sail together offering the opportunity for team training and mutual understanding of each other's strengths and weaknesses as a team.  There are no pre-requisite qualifications or sailing experience required.  To see the qualifications of your instructor visit the FAQ here.

The ISAF Offshore Special Regulations

The ISAF Offshore Special Regulations stipulate that at least 30% but not fewer than two members of a crew, including the skipper shall have undertaken offshore safety training within the five years before the start of the race.  Without this training no owner/skipper can meet the ISAF burden of the " responsible person in charge":

"The safety of a yacht and her crew is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the person in charge who must do his best to ensure that the yacht is fully found, thoroughly seaworthy and manned by an experienced crew who have undergone appropriate training and are physically fit to face bad weather. He must be satisfied as to the soundness of hull, spars, rigging, sails and all gear. He must ensure that all safety equipment is properly maintained and stowed and that the crew know where it is kept and how it is to be used. He shall also nominate a person to take over the responsibilities of the person in charge in the event of his incapacitation"

Current regulations limit the number of crew a skipper can race with without safety training. For this reason any crew with an ISAF Certificate of Competence can be a sought after commodity.  A CYA-ISAF offshore safety and sea survival certificate of competence is valid for five years.

The ISAF personal offshore safety certificate is  the spring board for crew to join campaigns in the following types of distance races:

                                Route Halifax Saint-Pierre
                                Marblehead to Halifax Ocean race
                                Ocean One International Yacht Race
Marion to Bermuda Cruising Yacht Race
                                Newport Bermuda race
                                Lake Ontario 300

The offshore safety and sea survival syllabus is second to none in Canada and meets and exceeds the ISAF OSR Appendix G.  The course will be taught by an instructor with offshore racing experience.
